2011 started with great albums...Our souls and ears enjoying the musical feast... It will be very difficult to choose my favorite one , but Radiohead,PJ Harvey and Gil Scott-Heron& Jamie XX ( member of The XX) will be on top.
Most people would agree that King Tubby was the pioneer of the beautiful musical genre(or sub-genre) called Dub. He was a gifted sound engineer and started to play with the songs that they recorded. With delays, reverbs and loud drum&bass , he would transform this song to a totally different song.
let's listen one of his best song...
But of course , there were others and there was a little competition between them. The first independent Jamaican Label’s founder Sir Clement “Coxsone” Dodd , Lee “Scratch” Perry, Augustus Paoblo ,Scientist, the Power Duo Sly&Robbie are the very important figures of Dub music... a great album by Sly and Robbie
Dub became very popular in England in the 70’s and since then it has big effect and influence in the alternative rock scene but also in electronic music. John Lydon(a.k.a Johnny Rotten) and Keith Levene -the founder of very great post-punk band P.I.L- were big dub®gae fans, as well as Clash members. Mikey Dread , Mad Professor were probably the first jamaican dub artist in England. Dub influences can be heard in bands/artist like :
You can hear the echoes of Jamaica in P.I.L a lot...
P.I.L , Slits , Clash, Bush Tetras, Arthur Russel, Pop Group,This Heat, Cabaret Voltaire,Aphex Twin,Prodigy,Thom Yorke,Public Enemy , Air,Massive Attack,Portishead,Boredoms,Talking Heads,Radiohead,Burial,Sun Araw, LA Vampires, Yellow Swans and of course Gorillaz!
These are my favorite dub albums in no particular order.
